Earnings were down compared with the second quarter, however, largely as a result of foreign currency balance sheet transactions which were a big negative in the recent quarter. Operating earnings, which exclude foreign currency balance sheet translation effects and other specified items, were $276 million, compared to $140 million in the year-earlier quarter and $234 million in the second quarter 2004. Sales were up by $2.7 billion to $6.243 billion for the quarter, against $3.529 billion in the third quarter of 2003, although the figure was down slightly from second quarter 2004 sales of $6.252 billion. "Alcan delivered another strong earnings and cash-flow performance, despite rising external costs and normal seasonal slow-downs," said Travis Engen, Alcan president and chief executive officer Engen said progress on the spin-off of rolled products group Novelis is going well and also predicted the aluminum market will remain strong. "Looking ahead, we expect aluminum fundamentals to remain strong," he said. "Raw material and energy costs will likely pose challenges in the near-term, but we are confident that our operating discipline will continue to serve us well."
